Sibelius Monument

This abstract statue is the Sibelius Monument, created to honor Finland's greatest composer Jean Sibelius.  The statue consists of hollow metal pipes designed to capture blowing wind and create tones.  This work was considered very contrroversial when constructed and the artist was ridiculed.

  

 

A few yards away is another statue that was built to placate the detractors of the other monument. In a style typical of many of the countries that border the former Soviet Union, this is a bust of Jean Sibelius.  We both wonder how this is a more appropriate monument than the pipes.
