Katherine's Palace Exterior

Our visit to St. Petersburg took us to many palaces and cathedrals. This is the palace of Catherine I.  The palace was ransacked and razed by the Nazis in WWII.  Much of the building has been restored to its original appearance.

Also at Catherine's Palace, the "onion" shape steeples are a common feature in Russian architecture. On the day we were here, the sunlight reflected so intensely off the gold covered domes that you couldn't look at them without sunglasses.

Peter & Paul Cathedral Interior

This is the interior of Peter and Paul's Cathedral.  This is where all the Czars and their families are entombed.  A room off the main sanctuary has recently been dedicated to the remains of Nicholas II, the last Czar, whose family was executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918.
